Black Pearl Earrings

Ideally, a quality black pearl will exhibit few surface imperfections, enjoy a high surface luster.

Generally, the blacker pearls are most desirable, the finest black pearls have a green undertone, making them the most sought after pearl available and by extension black pearl earrings are one of the most sophisticated piece of jewelry in demand.

Each piece of jewelry has a story. Black pearl earrings usually tell a tale of intrigue and sophistication. You can almost hear these precious gems whispering stories of being formed deep in a shell. They emerge after developing into the perfect, dark spheres that are sought after by pearl harvesters around the globe.

The conversion from the protective shell may have left what were to become the black pearl earrings a little overwhelmed. These dark orbs overwhelmed me as well when I opened the small gift box that housed them. I have to admit that this was one of the finest gifts I have ever received.

Those black pearl earrings were not initially worn by me. My husband found them at an estate sale and he couldn’t stop staring at them.

He thought that they would be the perfect gift for our anniversary and he was absolutely correct. I was speechless when I saw them and I have been wearing them ever since.

The single disadvantage to wearing black pearl earrings is that you have to make sure that they are easily seen. I have long hair and the small gem stones seemed to disappear under locks of hair.

This problem is easily solved by arranging my hair around them but this can take a little extra time and this is a very small price to pay considering the comments of admiration I receive each time I sport the black pearl earrings.

I soon discovered that the jewelry was part of an estate so I decided to do a little homework. It turns out that the gems were owned by a Scottish lady during the turn of the 20th century. The original owner of the black pearl earrings was a descendant of Mary, Queen of Scots.

This regal ancestor had a daughter who moved to the United States during World War I. The black pear earrings came to the New World as well and settled in a small town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This descendant of Mary had no daughters but she presented the black pearl earrings as a gift to her daughter-in-law.

Their daughter-in-law kept the black pearl earrings for the rest of her life but sadly, she didn’t have children of her own. The jewelry became part of the estate sale my husband attended. I keep the black pearl earrings along with Ann’s story. I think that her legacy should accompany the jewelry. After all, Ann did take such good care of them for so many years.

With black pearls especially, keep in mind that some skin types secrete more acid than others that can degrade the pearl, eating away the surface material. If worn regularly keep all pearls, including black pearl jewelry, away from perfumes and dyes and wash often with a damp cloth.
